Two different shrubs, far apart in the yard...

And both have major limbs that won't break dormancy though the rest of them are fully and healthily leafed out. One is a Viburnum judii, which bloomed well and is now leafed out, but that one big limb.... The other is a Heptacodium miconioides--Seven Son Flower--and it has two major limbs that won't leaf out.

The dormant limbs are dormant, not dead. I've checked repeatedly. What do you suppose is going on?

the limbs can be dead.. and still have green cambian ... but by the hot heat of summer.. it will disappear ...

both are subject to renovation pruning ...

my 7 sons.. spent 5 years.. losing one of 2 major trunks.. over.. and over.. and over ...

had i been space limited in suburbia .... it would have been sacrificed to the shrub gods long ago ....

but eventually.. it got over it.. and performs to specs ... though i a form i would have never expected... lol ..

I had a sweetgum and Nyssa that where just sitting not doing anything. Wood was green but just a week ago it started to go brown.

I have a Parrotia that still hasn't leafed out but its green. Just have to be patient I guess.

Good news is that you can prune those canes to the ground like Ken eluded to so all is not lost. They might shoot up some vigorous growth once you do so.

I considered them dormant because there was green cambium. I hate to have to cut a major limb--especially from the Viburnum-it's a limb not a cane and shouldn't need that kind of rejuvenation, but I guess I have no choice. Any idea what causes such things?

its really not a big deal ... other than in your head..

though we guide things into a form we prefer.. sometimes.. plants insist on doing their own thing.. so be it ...

ps: i still hate my 7 sons.. every single time i look at it.. and get really pissed off.. when peeps wax poetic about them .... but.. thats all in my head.. so i otherwise ignore it .... though it does have some neat mature bark .... IF!!! i had to say something nice about it ... lol ...
