Sorry to hear about your 'Michael Dodge'. I checked it out on the internet and found that it has yellow fruit which is a surprise. There are so many virbunums available, I'm sure you'll find one to meet your needs. I just got back from the nursery and am trying to decide whether to plant the virbunum carlesii variety called 'Diana'. Its very near in description to 'Korean Spice' which has a wonderful fragrance. Here's a description of it I copied from a Google search:

"In New England Viburnum carlesii is known as The Mayflower or Mother's Day Viburnum, since it is always in bloom on that special day in early May. 'Diana' is a compact cultivar of this species with reddish pink buds opening to the most fragrant white blossoms whose heady perfume fills the whole garden. Fall color is a deep burgundy. Grows 5-6' high and wide."

The Viburnum Carlesii called 'Korean Spice' is suppose to be taller and have the same wonderful fragrance. Maybe that would work for you.

You might try scraping some of your 'Michael Dodge" stems and see if it's still green underneath before digging it out. Nevertheless, good luck.

Cut off whatever stems are dead, and give it a chance to resprout from the roots - which Viburnum dilatatum will do with abandon, if the roots are still healthy.

You won't have any flowers on new shoots this year, but you'll have a rejuvenated shrub for next year.

Thanks, Viburnum Valley, I did note a leaf very low on the plant, though all the stems I check are dead. I will cut it back. But, do you have any idea why it died? We had the coldest winter in 35 years, but all the other viburnums are thriving--several different dilatatums, setigerums, dentatums, a Mohawk, Mohican, Allegheny, Prague, Cree, etc.
