I have a serviceberry (exact name unknown - put in by out-of-business landscaper.) It did well until a Spring ice storm 2 years ago. After the storm, there was a lot of damage to the tree - multiple dead branches. Now, there are four long, leggy branches with leaves and flowers at the ends. Can this be saved? It looks pretty bad. Would pruning it all the way down rejuvenate it? It does have one sucker branch that is shorter and healthy-looking. I cut back the branches that were dead and am now left with a significant clump of dead wood at the bottom with the few remaining living branches rising above. Thanks!

Hi - I am in Texas. My bush is small "young> and now has several coming up near it. So, my answer would be to wait and see. I hear they are tough plants. Good luck. tina_2

I've had Serviceberries suffer through all sorts of transplants, storms, etc. They seem extremely tough to me, still alive, even if not looking as nice as they once did. They do sucker I'm going to give mine this season to see what they grow...and if they don't think I'll be able to make them look nice over 2-3 years with careful pruning, I will move them to the thicket behind my home for the birds and get some new ones. You might actually get some nice, more uniform growth by cutting them all down to 6" from the bottom...but not sure if this cobbling should be preferably done in the late winter when the tree is dormant? Hopefully, someone else can pipe in, as I would be interested to know, as well, if we could cut this shrub back.
