 o
Shrub identification please

I am buying a house, and along the fence are about 6 shrubs, and I wonder if anyone can identify them. They are somewhat purple, and they are cone shaped, narrow at the bottom and wider at the top. Here is a photo. I wish I would have gotten a shot of the whole shrub. They are currently about 5' tall.

They also seem to have some kind of disease. Mostly they look fine, but there are some leaves with white "stuff" on them.

Thanks in advance!

They are ninebarks, Physocarpus, most likely the cultivar 'Diablo', although there are other dark leaved forms. These have a tendency to develop powdery easily, sometimes rather intensely, although I'd have thought it far too early in the season to have contracted it already. Try spraying regularly with the PM fungicide of your choice.

Ooops!

Sorry, that should read "a tendency to develop powdery mildew easily" :-)
