Fountain Grass Maintenance

Greetings...I have a question or 2 on how to care for Fountain grass. Two previous attempts to grow Fountain Grass in my landscape area have failed and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Each time I planted the grass in the spring and it grew fine and thrived. The problems seem to be my maintenance at the end of the season. The 1st time, I cut the grass back in October. The 2nd attempt...I left the grass alone through the winter and cut it back in March (of this year). Each time...the grass did not come back.

According to the label on the plants (both purchased from Lowes...maybe that is the problem?) said the plant is to be cut back in winter. I live in Pittsburgh PA.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

IMHO ... i am not aware that you can kill things ONLY based on cutback ... though i admit i dont have any experience with this stuff ... or lets say.. cutting back within a given window.. missing it by a week or month.. rather than cutting it down in mid summer ...

how about some more facts about planting .. soil.. care.. fertilizers, if any .. etc ...

so that we might get a better picture of what is going on

Grasses are adapted to herbivory. Cutting them is akin to herbivory.

I suspect the cold is killing this grass. Do the Extension Agencies there say this is treated like an annual in your area?

If by fountain grass you mean Pennisetum rubrum, the answer is easy. It is not hardy where you are. It won't live thru the winter no matter what you do. Try to find the botanical/scientific/Latin name for what you are growing. Then you can Google it and check the hardiness.

There have been several threads on GW about overwintering this species indoors and many methods have been tried, without much success.

But maybe you are growing some other species. Find out and look it up or post here.
