Holly Leaves Brown and Dead

One year ago we moved into a 40+ yr old raised ranch with a wonderful 20 ft holly tree outside my kitchen window. I fell in love immediately! It proudly displayed beautiful foliage and green berries in the summer and vibrant red berries all winter. We had a rough winter here in PA and now there are randomly scattered small groups of dead, uniformly brown leaves on the tree. There is new growth on most of the branch tips (not the brown ones of course). I had noticed one or two of these last summer, but so many more this spring worry me. I love this tree and a landscaper who was here doing other work last summer said it looked healthy at that time. So, should I be worried? When should I trim out the dead leaf clumps, and what can I do? I don't want to lose this treasure!
