| Hi folks,
I moved into a house in January located in the DC suburbs of Virginia, and I'm trying to ID the shrubs out front. They are evergreen and have thin deciduous-like leaves. New leaves are red/purple and turn green as they age. Their shape is narrow and oblong with a smooth edge, and they are oddly pinnate. For the life of me, I can't figure out what these are. I've posted some pictures of the leaves, flowers, and structure on Flickr if anyone wants to take a shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36745111@N03/4645625368/in/set-7215762414 9067310/ thanks in advance! |

| Nandina domestica. |
|
| Wow, Iooked up some pictures, and you nailed it. Thanks! I had come across it before during my internet searches, and I think what threw me off was it's name: "heavenly bamboo." It turns out it's not a real bamboo at all, but instead is a shrub of the Barberry family. |

| Yes and invasive in some southeastern states, especially Florida. |

| I have used nandina repetively in plantings here in KS for its vertical, bamboo-ish character and wonderful red berries and fall color. NEVER has been invasive, until... This spring I have seen seedlings everywhere in residential landscape travels here in SC KS. It has been a nice, single, self-controllable plant until the last two years. I haven't seen self-seeding EVER until now. Presently occuring on the south side of residences, mostly against the foundations in thick mulch. Climate change? Nandina used to die back in the winter here with never a seedling, especially in the 80's when winters here would reach 0° to -10°. Haven't seen that in a while. hortster |
