Can the shrubs survive??

Two shrubs are in bad shape. Can anyone help? I don't know what kind of shrub it is or why it would be having this problem. There were no signs of problems last year. We don't have a dog peeing on it either. :)

RE: Can the shrubs survive??

where are you ... looks like winter damage.. but that is hard to believe in z10 ... if that is what that number means ...

sure.. its green.. some part of it will survive ..

the question is more along the lines.. if this is in front of the house... whether you want a 2 or 3 years renovation project in a prime place right out the front door ...

in other words.. if this were out somewhere on my 5 acres.. i would enjoy learning the process ... and seeing how it does it ..

but it would drive me insane.. if i had to look at it every day .. in that state ...

once you are sure there is no shot at late emergence of leaves.. then all brown should be cut out ... and you will be left with a memory of its former self ...

and no.. fert will not speed up the process ...

RE: Can the shrubs survive??

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. Looks like its time to go shopping...

RE: Can the shrubs survive??

where are you???

the problem... is the size of the space.. and the winter sun.. being retained on the brick wall ... in the dead of winter ... and then the plant getting zapped cold at night ... and a really bad winter ...

is that a south facing wall ... making the damage on the SW ...

note that the only live part.. is where the back changes from brick.. to window ... whats that all about ... hmmmm.. it might support my hy-pot-a-nouse ... or not.. what do i know...

where are you ???? what will be a good substitute... etc .. frankly.. if i had that tiny depth space.. i would be planting planting perennials.. that die to the ground in winter.. after i got rid of the rock.. but i suspect that is not something you want to do ... and then putting a bed outside the sidewalk.. and putting shrubs there .. where they have space to grow ...
