Does any one know what the bark on mature red twig dogwood looks like? We bought an old house which has a shrub in the backyard that is 15' high and about 25' across. It iscomposed of many dozens of shoots that are an inch and a half to two inches in diameter and look like grapevine or wisteria. The leaves and flowers look like a dogwood and the new shoots are a scaley red color. What is it?

The new bark, leaves etc. are the same as a younger red-twig dogwood.

old red twig branches lose some color as they get bark. if you have nit cut them back the bush should flower and fruit. a shame i pruned mine hard last year. cant go take a picture. imo the flowers and fruit are an under-rated asset.
