variegated spirea?

My spirea seems to have a section that is now variegated. Are you familiar with this? Is there a name for the variegated type? Would this be a "sport"? The flowers are normally reddish orange. The thumbnails should be clickable

Thanks in advance!

Might be a sport. If you have a decent botanical garden near you the curator may be interested in propagating it, but no guarantee it will be stable.

Thakns Ken - I will be interested to hear what he says. Also, as far as a decent botanical garden, Morris Arboretum is closest, but I am about 90 min from Longwood gardens. Should I email them the photos?

Thnaks in advance!

Why not? Can't hurt.

As I mentioned on the hosta forum, I suspect it's Spirea Anthony Waterer, which is known to throw variegated branches on a routine basis. Google got lots of pix.

My flaming mound spirea does this.

here is what frank said:

Ken,
Spirea is very easy to root. Usually only takes a week to ten days. You could cut the top off a plastic milk. You just need to keep the humidity until they root then gradually reduce the humidity. Don't put in full sun.

Frank

so gall milk jug.. sterilize 10 % bleach .... some sterilized media ... and a gal baggie.. insert damp media ... use a blade to cut the long into about 4 inch section ... rootone if you have some.. baggie on top.. in full shade.. but bright ...

in 2 weeks.. gently pull on one. and see if media starts to pull also..

what he didnt mention is what type of wood .... probably not the lush spring growth .... or it will just rot ... or timing ...
