Question About Pink Viburnums

Posted by jaxondel z7 (My Page) on

Does anyone here grow Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Molly Schroeder' or other pink-flowering viburnum? I'm wondering if color is dependent on soil pH (like Hydrangeas, for instance).

My 'Molly Schroeder' bloomed pink for the two years that I grew it in a container. It's now been in its permanent garden location for two years, and both years the blooms have been totally white. Any ideas re. how I can get the pink back? Play around with soil pH maybe? My garden soil is in the neutral range.

RE: Question About Pink Viburnums

I have no idea if it's true for Viburnum, but my pink flowering dogwood will be pinker in cool springs and whiter when there are hot springs. The only tomentosum I have is a white one and has great blooms this year.

RE: Question About Pink Viburnums

I've got two Molly Schroeders new this year- both still in containers at this point. Both started white about 2 weeks ago but have since gone pink. I know the soil they're in is neutral, so I don't think that's the key, but I couldn't say what would keep them white. I'll ask around though, I know some pretty serious viburnum nuts. If I come up with anything, I'll let you know.
