Trouble with my Miss Kim Lilac

Grafted Miss Kim Lilac

I have a Miss Kim Lilac grafted to the trunk of another species (not sure what it is). The tree is about 15-17 years old and has been doing fine for years.

This year I noticed a crotch in part of the tree that looks like it has been breached by nature or some type of bug. The head on the tree is about 6' or more in diameter. The branches are so close together I can't get a good look at what's going on.

Here is what it looks like this year. It appears to have some damage, because a section of the dome is without buds and looks dead.

Does anyone know what I should do to save this tree? Can it be saved?

as far as i am concerned... it is way to late to do anything ...

whats all the torture binding???

how long will it live.. who knows.. maybe a year.. maybe a decade or two ...

LOL. Ken tends to be fatalistic, but it does look like it is on the way out. If you have had it for that long be happy that it has lasted! When they get to that size their time is about up. Let nature take its course - when the manmade tree begins to fail, replace it, but until then, enjoy it.
