Propagating Spirea....

Posted by carrie630 z7bNC (My Page) on

I don't know the names of the two types of spireas I have, but they are lime green and produce pink flowers and the other is darker green - Two of the lime green shrubs have a very nice rounded shape, but there are three shoots coming from the top of the shrub that I was going to trim. Then I realized that I read somewhere that spireas are easy to propagate. (Easy in a way that you just put the stem in the ground and water)... Can I do that?

Thanks - Carrie

RE: Propagating Spirea....

I don't have a lot of experience, but I think you can propogate them by layering them. When I was checking up on a few that I am taking care of this year, I noticed that a branch had gotten covered by mulch from last year and when I pulled it out, there were roots growing where leaves used to be. Seems that the plant propogated itself! This link is for hydrangeas, but I think it should work for spirea as well!

Here is a link that might be useful: Layering instructions
