| I was walking around the yard today and looking back I'm not sure why I planted some plants and others I'm glad I did.
If you had to recommend only 5 shrubs (specific cultivar is fine) what would they be? Viburnum prunifolium
Others that fall in the why did I plant it? Black Iroquis Chokeberry - poor habit, not vigorous

| Golden Barberry - invasive color What does invasive color mean? |
|
| In that context I meant to use it as strong, intense, distracting. |

| Whaas, That happens to me all the time. I go to the nusery or big box store and see something and say "I must have"! I bring it home, plant it, and low and behold, the next year, I really wish I didn't plant that at all. In fact, that recently happened to me. Now, I hate to get rid of it, but I really don't like the way it looks. Just get rid of it and buy another plant. I guess gardens are alot like people, always changing and growing and learning. LOL. |

| Agree about the yellow barberry. FIL planted all along the side of the house and now I'm tempted to rip them out but the amount of effort that would involve is discouraging. They are bright and untidy looking. Just planted some itea little henry and fothergilla. Love the two spirea types I have and a rhodo bessie howell. One of the spireas I have has great red new growth turning to yellow. |

| Itea 'Little Henry' has been disappointing (too much dieback), 'Henry's Garnet' has done much better for me. I wish I hadn't planted Viburnum 'Summer Snowflake'; while they continue to grow (and flower!) in a very difficult spot (under the canopy of a Norway maple) I think they will outgrow the space, getting much taller than wide. I also have another grouping of Aronia 'Autumn Magic'(chokeberry) and I wish that I'd just added more of those. Clethra will get moved into much less prominent locations, they don't leaf out early enough to be front and center. I wish I'd bought a bigger crabapple, it looks so pathetic... I'm glad I planted Weigela 'Wine and Roses', oakleaf hydrangeas and red-twigged dogwoods (for winter interest). I love my 'Quickfire' hydrangea, V. 'Onondaga' and 'Summer Wine' ninebarks too. |

| Every spring the fragrance of Daphne Odorata aureo-marginata surprises me. I think "What is that?". I look for it and it's the Daphne. It's also a pretty shrub all year, but it's the scent that makes me glad I planted it. |
