I'm trying to screen my neighbor's yard. It is a west exposure. I'm doing a mixed hedge, as it's about 60 feet and gets varying amounts of sun. The sunny area has been easy - used Karl Forester grass, Fine Line Buckthorn and Ninebarks. The shady length gets a little morning sun, then shade the rest of the day. The soil is well drained amended clay. I'm considering Limelights (will wind be a factor?), & fothergilla, but am open to suggestions.

Spicebush is a native that should do well in you shady area, as long as the soil is on the acid side. Handsome large shrub with good yellow fall color. You'll probably be buying seedlings, so some will be male and some female--red berries on the females.

I am not familiar with the Spicebush, although it is native in Ohio. I wonder how fast growing it is? I like the heighth but it may get too wide for the space. Can it be kept in bounds easily?
