Dead? Fringe Flowers and Tropical Hibiscus

Hi,
I thought I would be creative this spring and transplant some of my fringe flowers and my Tropical hibiscus. They are NOT doing well and I am wondering how you know if they are dead? I am in Texas and soon after I transplanted it got very hot. I am watering and doing root stimulator, but nothing is helping. I am *hoping* that they will be okay for next year and they are just in severe shock. But if it has been long enough and they still haven't recovered, maybe it's time to throw in the towel and start with something different??

Thanks! Natalie

RE: Dead? Fringe Flowers and Tropical Hibiscus

When did you actually transplant them? If it's been months and they have no foliage, that's a very bad sign. You could do a bark scratch test to see if the stems are green underneath the bark. If not, that stem (at least) is dead.

The "root stimulator" stuff is snake oil, and you could save your time and money by forgetting about that.

If you do have signs of life (green under the bark), keep a close check on soil moisture and be sure the soil down at 1" to 2" remains moist. Also, proper mulch (if not already present) could greatly help.

Good luck!
