I need to find a nice "Evergreen Shrub" (no more than 8'tall x 5' wide. It will receive morning shade and afternoon sun. Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce
Dwarf Gold Hinoki Cypress 'Nana Lutea' (chamaecyparis obtusa)
Golden Mop Cypress (chamaecyparis pisifera)
Euonymus japonica 'Silver King' or 'Aureo-marginata'
Juniperus squamata 'Meyeri'
Breckman's Golden Arborvitae (platyclaudus orientalis 'Aurea Nana') - my favorite

Variegated Golden Euonymus. I don't know the specific variety I bought so many years ago. I regretted it for exactly the reasons you would appreciate it. ;)

Gardenia will be evergreen and wonderfully fragrant in the summer. It's not as happy with afternoon sun, but take care of it for the first two years and it should be OK. It's worth the trouble.

As I recall, you live in the PNW. If that's the case, there are literally scores of possibilities. And keep in mind that in our benign climate, various selections - including several mentioned above - will ultimately exceed your intended size limitations but many will tolerate careful pruning to keep size in check. A visit to a good garden center should reveal countless choices but I might consider Choisya ternata or Abelia x grandiflora.
