Erect Deep Shade Shrub

I'm looking for an erect narrow shrub for deep shade (north side of the house). Searching sites has drawn a blank.

The best I can come up with is Nandina domestica. I have 2 and they work well. But some variety would be nice. There is late evening sun in early summer. I'm not needing blooms but rather general foliage.

Are there any other suggestions?

Eleutherococcus sieboldianus variegatus. Very handsome, but very slow growing.

Thank you. But doesn't it grow about as wide as high? I'm looking for something skinny and 6-8' tall. Is there a tall slender cultivar?

How about Pieris japonica?

I hate to seem too picky, but pieris seems to be wider than high. I trying to find something rather columner. I haven't been successful, but I am still hopeful.

Well, there is always Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' - can't say it would enjoy the shade, but perhaps you don't exactly need it to grow like gangbusters, just exist?

There is also Prunus caroliniana 'Bright 'N Tight' - it will eventually get up to 25 feet though so that may be too big.

As for other things that are just a little too wide, you could nip them occasionally to keep them tighter. Not the preferred solution, I know, but doable.

esh ga, that Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' sounds very interesting and exactly what I had in mind. It doesn't have to grow much (and in fact I have an 8' limit). Thank you!

As for pruning shrubs to keep them narrow; well I'm a low maintenance person when I can get away with it. ;)

Do you have a recomended source? I see a wide variety of prices and initial sizes.

I've seen them at Home Depot around here (Atlanta).

I'll check the local HD. Thanks.

Yew, holly (already suggested) or box.

Fastigate yew.
