Pruning advice for a Pieris?

I love Pieris, but they don't seem to love me. I lost a small one that was in too much sun and the remaining one I have 'Dorothy Wycoff' is not doing too well. It lost it's interior branches. I put down some Hollytone this spring and it seems to have perked up some, but the bottom and the interior is pretty bare, with new growth at the tips. It is in an area with a lot of large maples nearby, so I'm not sure if it is the Ph or too much shade, or the trees sucking all the nutrients out of the soil. I am planning on fertilizing a couple more times with Hollytone this season. I am wondering if I can cut it back to the ground to bare wood and if I did, will it grow back from the base?
