New Smokebush leaves coloring and falling....why?

I planted a smoke bush this spring in an North facing, heavy clay, slightly wet area of my yard. We used Bio Tone in the hole, dug it properly and mulched around it etc.

Then we had an excessively wet spring (12 inches of water in 1 week)

Some of the leaves near the base turned color (like fall) and curled up and fell off. It has been progressing some, but it's not denuded.

We are in a hot/dry spell now, and I have been watering it.

Any thoughts?

Kcail
