 o
Mock Orange - Philadelphus coronarius 'Aureus'

I have a border bed on the north side of my house but about 6 feet or so away from the house. It gets little sun in the winter (which I guess I not concerned about) but other than early morning, gets sun through to sunset during the growing season. It historically was an iris bed with a Black Lace Elderberry on the end. The iris themselves are now history.

I'm looking at some Mock Orange and it says it needs some part shade to prevent foliage burn.

Anyone have experience with this shrub? Do I need the shade? If so, can you recommend another chartreuse shrub about the size of the mock orange that will take sun and my zone?

Thanks,

Charles

Most yellow foliage forms may burn in hot sun, regardless of what kind of shrub they are otherwise. 'Sutherland Gold' elderberry is supposed to hold up better than typical, but this is a more vigorous and reaching shrub than the golden mockorange. Doesn't produce fragrant cups either. But if the leaf color is the top priority, it might fit the bill.

I grew this a number of years ago. In my garden it had a lot of winter die-back (unlike all other mock oranges I've tried) and it didn't have as nice a gold color to the foliage as other gold shrubs I've grown. How about Spireae thunbergii 'Ogon' AKA Mellow Yellow? It has a graceful arching form, white spring flowers, and foliage that is gold in more sun, a bit more chartreuse in more shade. I'm not sure how well it would do in western sun. I have seen recommendations for full sun to part shade.

There's also yellow forms of ninebark on the market. But since you have an elder already, maybe you are not averse to elders in this spot.
