Repost - Looking for evergreen, 6-8' tall and 4' wide

Unfortunately, my other post appears to have broken (the reply button doesn't appear on the page). I did report the problem but it hasn't been fixed so I'm reposting for more suggestions.

Original post: I'd like to find an evergreen to anchor my border. It is fairly narrow between my house and the neighbors. It gets mostly morning to early afternoon sun. I've got a couple of full sun plants nearby (roses, tomatoes) that do fine there. The soil retains water well there (clay and no hot afternoon sun). My ideal plant would be a bluish evergreen about 6-8 feet tall and about 4 to 6 feet wide. I was thinking of a blue spruce, but I would need a small one and it really can't get too wide (6 feet means my husband curses me when he mows). Would 'Blue Globe' be appropriate? It was the only one I saw at the nursery that fit my requirements.

Reply from wendyb 5A/MA: Blue Globe will never (?) get tall enough. Mine is 5 years old and not even 3' tall.

In the post on Proven Winner shrubs, I saw a "new" pyramidal version of a Chamacyperis psifira, that looks like it might fit the bill.

My reply: I think you mean the one called Soft Serve. That one does look nice and would fit the space requirements. My worry is that it wants a lime free soil and my soil is alkaline (it kills blueberries quickly if I don't amended it well with sulfur). Would I need to use sulfur around Soft Serve for it to do well?

I grow Chamaecyparis pisifera (note the spelling) and my pH is in the mid 7s so that may not be an issue. Having sprung from the cultivar 'Boulevard' you may want to protect it from winter winds to keep from burning in our climate.

there are many kinds of plants that are evergreen ....

and many forums to cover such ...

shrubs are usually considered flowering shrubs ...

it seems you are looking for conifers.. in the shrub forum.. yes.. its a common tern.. but i dont know many of the conifer nuts who appreciate spring flowering shrubs ... so they dont hang out over here ...

ergo ... you might want to go ask at the conifer forum.. and peruse some of the hundreds of pix over there..

or dont.. post wherever you like

I recommend Chamaecyparis thyoides Glauca. It tolerates everything you're asking from it.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the suggestions. Chamaecyparis seems like the right genus to look in.

Ken, I wasn't sure which forum to ask in. I tend to think of conifers as trees and I wanted something more shrub size. But I'll add a cross-post over there.
