I was planning on planting 3 gallon red tips along my entire fenceline this weekend and was hoping for some tips. The area I am planting is about 85 feet long. How far should I space the shrubs from each other and how far from the fence? Is red tip a good choice? How often and how much should I water once they are planted? How big should I dig the holes? I am in north Texas. Also, my fence sits on top of a 10 foot stone retaining wall that is in my back neighbors yard. Would the roots ever damage the wall when they get big? Sorry so many questions I have never planted shrubs before.

why are you doing it at perhaps the worst time of year for planting things ....??? perhaps you could take some time and read some of the prior posts about.. PROPER PLANTING and proper timing ... ken

The most important thing you can do to ensure your success and avoid wasting money: DO NOT PLANT NOW. WAIT UNTIL FALL. It is just an excruciatingly bad time of year to be planting shrubs and expecting them to succeed. It's way too hot and dry in midsummer to be planting shrubs in Maryland where I live and it's just an exponentially worse time in TX where you live. Waiting will also give you time to learn about proper planting depths and irrigation. Oh, yeah, and the many diseases photinias are prone to.

Ok thanks for the warning, sounds like I better hold off until Fall. Do you think they could cause any damage to that retaining wall? What about spacing between them and how far out from the fence when the time comes? Any other shrubs that grow big like the red tips that are not as susceptible to disease?

I wonder if a Stevens Holly would be a good choice instead of the disease prone red tip photinias.

If you know your length, you already knew how many to purchase. Since you know their spread because you knew how many to purchase for the length, divide the 85/x for your spacing. And I Dan
