Favorite Plant Groupings

As I look around my garden its at a bit of a lull (except the roses)as many plants are starting to form their flower buds or just getting ready to flower.

I noticed I've made some bad decisions in regards to grouping plants for color and texture contrast when the plants aren't in bloom.

So I'm curious to hear what some of your favorite plant groupings are whether on purpose or by chance.

By chance:
Rose Glow Barberry, Birchleaf Spirea and Dappled Willow. Although I planted the spirea for fall color its nice rich green color and formal habit look great to tie in the color and contrast of the other plants.

On purpose:
Blue Shadow Fothergilla, Ruby Spice Clethra and Georgia Peach Coral Bells. Again nothing is actually in bloom or sporting fall color but the texture and color contrast looks fantastic between these plants everything else is just an added bonus as the season progresses.

For a nice tropical planting in a pot for part sun, try:

Thriller: Colocasia esculenta 'Mojito'
Filler: Coleus 'ColorBlaze®Royal Glissade®'
Spiller: Variegated spider plant

I like the point you make about "when the plants aren't in bloom". So many choices are made we see something in bloom at the nursery and make an impulse purchase.

Someone said the basic plan for an appealing garden requires variation in size, form and texture. A small conical conifer (dwarf Alberta Spruce), an azalea and a couple of large-leafed hosta make a beautiful, low-maintenance display. The flowers are nice, but not essential.

Someone posted pictures of a dwarf Japanese Maple with blue hosta beneath it. The contrast was breathtaking.

I've been buying Siberian Iris lately. SI provide an upright form with spear-shaped foliage which maintains its beauty all season after flowering. It combines well with any low-growing plant or something with large oval foliage. Or just an oval rock.
