Pruning of spring or early summer flowering shrubs should be done right after they bloom. That will maximize the bloom potential for the following season. As to how much to prune, that's up to you and how you see the plant. Do you want to prune it to the ground or does it just need some tidying up? Many established flowering shrubs can be rejuvenated by severe pruning but such drastic action is typically not necessary unless they have been neglected for years. And the ideal rejuvenation pruning involves removing only a third of the oldest stems/branches at a time, extending the process over a series of years. This is the least disruptive to the plant and allows it to retain its appearance and bloom capacity while encouraging vigorous new growth.

Unless this is a process you feel you need to follow, cleaning up of any deadwood or leggy, unruly growth is typically sufficient.

I purchased a verigated pink weigelia last summer. It is only about 2' tall. this winter it turned brown and im not sure that is what it should do. Do they turn brown in the winter? And since its so small should i prune it after it blooms this spring, if it blooms? Thanks

I not sure what to do about my Weigelia. It bloomed great for the last three yrs.. Now after this winter the back half of it has no buds on it. the front is full of buds. should I cut out the back which is just brown shoots.. or should I let it go and see what happens? Thanks
