buddleia alternifolia

I just saw this in a park seed catalog. They claim it is hardy in zone 5, but I wonder if I can trust that. It blooms on old wood and my other Butterfly bushes always die to the ground. Would I get any blooms on this? I have a very open windy lot, so there would be no protection in the winter except for a layer of mulch. Thanks for your help.

I have seen them in Z 5. Beautiful shrub. I am planning to get one too, but I would not deal with that catalog.

It blooms in late spring on old wood and unlike buddleia davidii stay pretty much alive (for me) even after extremely cold winter of 2004.
It might be attractive in a short period of bloom, but rest of the year I can't say any good words about it. Shrub is somewhat unruly and any pruning should be done immediately after the bloom time.

Oh, forgot to add.
Growth rate is somewhat slow in a first couple of years, but staring from year #3 you may expect 1-2'+ a year and if even half of that new growth will survive your winters you'll have a pretty large shrub by year #5.

Thanks. I have enough room that the shrub could be placed to be enjoyed in the spring and ignored the rest of the year. I will look for it here, before ordering from anyone. I was happy with my bareroots that came from the park wholesale department. But the price was right also!

I've had a buddleia alternifolia in zone 5 at the top of a fairly windy hill for about 10 years and it survives very well. Each year there is some deadwood from the wind, I think. I haven't done any other pruning because the place I bought it from (Phoenix Flower Farm, wonderful place) let theirs grow. Mine was magnificent this year, but needs to be pruned back a bit and I haven't gotten around to it yet. Not quite sure what to do!

Should Butterfly Bushes be cut back in the winter? I am in zone 6. Thank you

End of winter, when new shoot growth starts for B. davidii.
