How about one of the native deciduous azaleas? The evergreen Rhododendron Cadis also is reputed to be sun tolerant. Mine looks good under similar conditions as you described, but is too small to bloom.

Any deciduous shade loving shrub will tolerate this condition fine - hydrangea, fothergilla, clethra, itea, witch hazel, etc.

While pricey, Mt. Laurel might do fine. It seems to survive in the open, among the pines and bare Winter oaks, here in the piney woods of S. Jersey, and blooms beautifully after shaded by the Spring foliage of the trees.
