Hi Everyone:
I have 9 rose of sharon shrub/trees, all have leafed out but 3 of them. I have scratched the bark from top to bottom of the 3 trees and they are still green but no sign of leaves coming. Any ideas of what could be wrong with them, the 3 are approx 5 yrs old - 6 feet tall.
Thanks Gail |

amiigaff, You are in Canada, and I know PA had a horrible cold winter last year and my friend lost alot of her plants and shrubs. If they don't leaf out, they are dead. Sorry, but it does happen. |

| With established shrubs, the end of June is way past time for patients IMO. Unfortunately, I think it's time to plan for replacement. My first guess on the problem, without more info, would be an unusually cold winter, especially if you noticed dieback on any of the ones that came back OK. If that's not the problem, more info will be needed for an attempt at diagnosis. |

Rose of sharon not only respond to the air temperature and the amount of direct light they receive when it comes to fully breaking dormancy. But they also require for the ground to as warm as the like it before they will leaf out. Could it be that those that are leafed out have already begun receiving all those aspects I mentioned above; while the ones slow to leaf are lacking in any of the requirements I mentioned above? Or at the very least had those requirements met a much later time than those others. Even if trees that are planted in a row often show such differences in their growth rates, and resistance levels |

Hi All: The 3 rose of sharon (2 Red Heart & 1 double white with a red eye) are in full sun, our spring has been really wet & on the cool side. I planted 3 new ones last fall & they have come back but have some light die back. The 3 established ROS are green under the bark from top to bottom. Would a slow release fertilizer or a root stimuator maybe help to get them going? Thanks Gail |

| Rose of Sharon are heavy feeders, so I would not think thing that a non-burning type of, slow release fertilizer, like Osmokote, would hurt them any. Just do not give them too much, since they are not leafed out just yet. |
