Privacy hedge/shrub ideas for dense, dry shade.

In Michigan. Back of lot line, a row of evergreens back there is going kaput, quite heavily shaded by nearby large, maturing oaks. The evergreens are sparse and scraggly, not yielding much privacy anymore.

I do know two things that thrive back there, buckthorn and Tartarian honeysuckle. Yuck.

Any ideas for anything a little less, well, a weed? Something with a little more class and pizzazz?

And no, a fence is not an option. I wish it were. My community restricts fences quite heavily, but has no restrictions on hedgerows.

Oh, should add, deciduous is fine, no one goes back there all winter to speak of.

Oaks have a deep taproot and unlike maples don't suck moisture and nutrients quite so badly. A little known but lovely shrub is Eleutherococcus sieboldiana variegatus. The downside is that it is exceedlingly slow growing. But I like mine very much.

Oh, that plant. I have one, but didn't recognize that name. I thought it was Aralia something. It is a slow grower. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yews are always a good standby for heavy shade. Also pretty drought tolerant once established.

Would Aucuba survive in your zone? Viburnum tinus? And here I would say Mahonia, maybe Mahonia 'Winter Sun', but I understand some Mahonias are invasive in the US. The native M aquifolium aka Oregon Grape will do in shade but is fairly low growing.

Unfortunately, neither A. japonica nor that species of Viburnum are hardy here. Mahonias, well, I don't have much experience with those other than M. aquifolium, so I'll research those. Thank you for the response.
