shasta tom vibernum

in Ct I bought a shasta vibernum and planted it without anything about two weeks ago. It seems it droops once the sun gets on it. Can I dig it up and fertilize it etc and put it back in the hole or is it to late? It was only two weeks ago and the rootball was quite compacted
Want to do a better job at planting it as I did very quickly. Why is it always drooping as if dying though it gets better at night?

fertilizing it will most likely kill it ...

as will the compacted root mass ...

most likely you disturbed its ability to move water from its roots to the leaves ... and are not properly watering it throughout the entire root mass ..

IMHO.. no shrub needs anything amended to the soil ... it ONLY needs its roots spread out.. and PROPER watering ...

i would start watering it properly.. and then in fall.. dig it back up and re-work the roots ... the hot part of summer is too close to do any kind of root surgery

I bought in a container 3 gallon. not burlap or anything. Is that the same reasoning.

Yes. It was probably root bound. In fall you will dig and break up the root ball some.

The leaves on this plant droop in general. The degree of drooping would confirm if its a water issue.

Typically it is quite sensative to water needs. Once it goes dry it tends not to bounce back until the following year.

If it gets adequate moisture at the right time this plant will reward you!

I just planted a new one and had to cut the heck out of the roots to get it somewhat proper.

Give it lots of water. I bought two four foot ones in '07 and every time they started to droop, I watered them heavily. Sometimes I had to water them three or four times in a week, depending on how hot and dry it was. Also the one that gets more shade seems to be doing better than the one that gets mostly sun.

It needs water, water, water. All newly planted shrubs do and especially pot-bound plants. It will live and do fine if you water deeply and often and then mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. Good luck.

I have a similar issue but I have a Judd Viburnum. We planted two in a heavy, wet clay area. We followed all the proper planting instructions and put in Bio Tone. Then, this spring we had 12 inches of water in 1 week. The water was standing slightly in that area.

The purple Salvia I planted around it died of either mildew or excessive water. One viburnum began to get large brown patches on its leaves where the leaf joins the stem and then completely curl and fall off. It looks miserable.

I've watered it since we're in a very unseasonable hot/dry spell and still nothing. I've been told that Viburnums don't typically get sick. Any suggestions?

The second viburnum about 15 feed away is fine. There is a smokebush between them who is curling and losing leaves too.

Thanks!
Kcail
