| When I relandscaped the front of our house 4 yrs ago, I put in 9 Juniper "Lime Glow". I love the almost irridescent color. Here;s a photo of some of the young plants:
The tag from the grower (Star?) said mature size would be 2'x 2'. So I measured and allowed for that size. The problem is that they've outgrown the area allowed. GRRRRR. They're now over 3' wide. So I went online and found that several sites have conflicting information. Some say mature width is 3', others say 4', still others say 8-10' (Yikes!). What is the REAL story so I can plan and plant properly? Thanks. |

| at the link it says the annual growth rate is: Intermediate: 6-12" (15-30cm) per yr., with a size in 10 years at: 6-15' (1.8-4.5m) at 10 yrs. the tag lied ... the problem with CONIFERS.. is that the will grow at the annual growth rate for basically your lifetime... and size ESTIMATES are given at only 10 years ... move them out or get rid of them ... also note.. i linked you to the American Conifer soc. database .. they arent shrubs ... go figure .... ken |

| Thanks, Ken, for the info and link. Hey, we used to be neighbors. I'm in the twp. just west of your former homestead. I've been playing with perennials since I started gardening but the last yr or so have been adding shrubs to reduce the work. Not as young as I used to be. Hate when those tags are wrong. And not just a little wrong, a bunch! Sheesh. Hmm, what to do. Hate to move them out b/c they're so great looking in front of the house. Can they be pruned? How? Love their shape and color. I moved the Ninebark 'Summer Wine' that was behind the ones in front of the garage on the right and will spread those three out as a temp fix. If there's no good way to prune them, I'll probably have to put something else there. Darn. |

| No, Northville. Ken, your advice is so very helpful. I'm always learning on this site, but I really hit the jackpot. I'll check out the conifer forum. Thank you so very much! I try to avoid plants that need pruning, too, which is why I was drawn to junipers. Little did I know! I used boxwoods tho (picked my poison) for design interest. They're not too labor intense:
The budget is stretched at present so I'll work on a design plan and wait until I must move them out. Thanks, again. |

| Everything grows, those junipers are mere inches from the walk in your picture. |
|
| Actually, bboy, it's the perspective of the photo. I planted them 36" center to center and 36" back from the walk and drive. The tag said they'd be vase-shaped 2' x 2' so that's what I expected. They're actually more horizontal than vase-shaped. The tag really lied alot. Oh well. |

| As mentioned shrubs do not grow to the size on a tag and then come to a halt. A slow-growing conifer often seen as a small shrub can be a 20' tree in a 70-year-old planting. Nursery tags just give representations of performance considered to be typical - and this will always have to be for a certain period of time, since shrubs grow larger every year. |
