I planted six 1 gal. Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs in April. I want to insure these eventually become nice full, bushy shrubs. Should I pinch the growing tips as I see a couple of inches of new growth to force new stems to develop or just leave them alone? I pinch my Ninebark 'Summer Wine' in this way, but I wasn't sure if I should do the same thing with the Weigelas. Please let me know what you think.

i dont usually do anything to newly planted things for at least one full season does it have enough roots to maintain the forced branching you are insisting on??? and IMHO... weigalia is pruned thru rejuvenation pruning.. not pinching .... ken

I wouldn't use the pinching method either. Although they flower on new wood, I get better flowering by cutting them back 1/2 way after they flower. That way I have a full blooming shrub late spring then it will look tidy for the rest of the season. Otherwise Weigela get scraggly pretty quick. Just wait another year. You can prune out an outlying vigorous shoots now though.

Okay, thank you. I am new to growing shrubs, but I am learning a lot. My 1 gallon Weigela 'Wine & Roses' shrubs are getting ready to bloom. I see a bunch of new flower shoots forming at the ends of the branches. So once it finishes blooming is it okay to cut off the spent blooms?
