As with other groups where you should look is among the various evergreen species. Viburnum tinus, V. odoratissimum etc.

I like 'Compactum', the clone Monrovia sells seems to be self-fertile. Otherwise I prefer the forms with shiny leaves.

This might be the kind of thing you are looking for. Plants here appear to resemble V. cylindricum, as though closely related. I'd think they are probably growing the stock in southern California.
