Viburnums for warm climates

I'm a big viburnum lover, but my choices for So Cali are somewhat limited due to our mild climate. Yesterday I bought an overgrown/ pot-bound 'Onondaga' viburnum- neglected, but I should be able to bring it back.

Has anyone else grown this variety in a southern garden? I believe it was a National Arboretum introduction years ago.

As with other groups where you should look is among the various evergreen species. Viburnum tinus, V. odoratissimum etc.

thanks. I've grown tinus before- it's a great plant.

I like 'Compactum', the clone Monrovia sells seems to be self-fertile. Otherwise I prefer the forms with shiny leaves.

This might be the kind of thing you are looking for. Plants here appear to resemble V. cylindricum, as though closely related. I'd think they are probably growing the stock in southern California.

Here is a link that might be useful: Honey Tree Viburnum (Viburnum arbicolon 'Honey Tree')
