Your only problem is that the purpleleaf ones will be partly green.

I bought 'My Monet' at the local nursery. I will try to plant it in dappled shade hoping for the best. Since it is dwarf, it will be easy to replant...

I have a Wine & Roses and a Java Red in a shaded area (gets sun for a couple of hours a day at best). Flowering aside, they do well, are nice and full, have uniform growth and have good foliage color. Flowering, however, is minimal (if you blink, you'll miss the blooms).

The foliage color is so nice, I can live with short blooming... I will also try to not blink :0)

Those are my sentiments. Since very little will bloom much in my shaded area anyway, may as well have colorful foliage. I know that weigelas are prized for their blooms, but I think that their colors and forms when they are not in bloom are overlooked.

I agree. I just bought a 'My Monet' weigela. It is not blooming, but foliage is so beautiful! The plant is dwarf, I beleive it will make a stunning combo with 'Wine and Roses' at the background even without flowers!

I have Wine and Roses in shade and it is doing fine and flowers. It had a deep purple color to the leaves. I've had it for years and it seems to be a slow grower but I did not want it to get huge anyway. Zone 5 here.
