Your shrub (aka 'Bob') is a Robinia hispida (Rose acacia)

Thanks, Ken and Smivies. Mystery solved. Bob is certainly easier to say than Rose acacia:) I actually thought that the flowers looked like sweet peas. I am glad to know it's name so I can tell my sister.

I agree that it's Robinia, but am less certain of it's species designation. Other robinias/hybrids can appear similar. Then again, maybe Smivies knows Bob better than I do.

The bristles visible in photo #1, color of the flower, and relative size of the plant indicate R. hispida. Without actually seeing it in person or access to higher resolution photos, I suppose it could be a hybrid with hispida as one of the parents?

I am happy just to know that it is a Robinia, but after doing some research, I think it is R. hispida also. It is so difficult to identify a plant without having a starting point. You guys are great! I have a feeling that in our area this was just called a Bristly Locust.
