Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name of this shrub. I was at my sisters today and it really appealed to me. She has this shrub in two places in her yard and my brother -in-law said it had a very shallow root system when they moved it from his mother's house to theirs. One shrub (tree?) is about 6 feet tall and the other is about two feet tall. It has very fine hairs all along the stems with some stickers. The blooms have no fragrance that I could tell. Thanks in advance. Vickie

Here is a link that might be useful: link

Your shrub (aka 'Bob') is a Robinia hispida (Rose acacia)

Thanks, Ken and Smivies. Mystery solved. Bob is certainly easier to say than Rose acacia:) I actually thought that the flowers looked like sweet peas. I am glad to know it's name so I can tell my sister. I love these forums! Vickie

I agree that it's Robinia, but am less certain of it's species designation. Other robinias/hybrids can appear similar. Then again, maybe Smivies knows Bob better than I do.
|
The bristles visible in photo #1, color of the flower, and relative size of the plant indicate R. hispida. Without actually seeing it in person or access to higher resolution photos, I suppose it could be a hybrid with hispida as one of the parents?

I am happy just to know that it is a Robinia, but after doing some research, I think it is R. hispida also. It is so difficult to identify a plant without having a starting point. You guys are great! I have a feeling that in our area this was just called a Bristly Locust. Ken, I have to agree that this is not a very nice looking specimen. It needs help:) Vickie
|
Maybe it's going for Blob instead of Bob.

lol, Brandon! Good suggestion, Ken. I will do that and give my sister the info. She really needs to move the tall one because it is way too close to her Altheas. Thanks. Vickie
