To prune or not to prune, that is the question...

I know you prune a flowering shrub after it flowers, but what if it flowers twice as in a Weigela 'Red Prince'. The second flush is not as intense as the first, which by the way is pretty much over with. So if I prune now, I'll miss the second flush, but if I wait until after the second flush, will I interfere with next year's buds?

Beating the monster back. Some shrubs look best in their natural state, but these guys just look messy. I was planning on using a loper, is that okay Ken? Very quick and easy...

so sacrifice next years bloom.. and get to them ... i just had to take down a giant lilac .... the biggest 3 branches going over 3 inches... lopers would not have worked ... and i had to go to my folding pruning saw .... cut as close to the ground as possible.. which can be anywhere from an inch to 12 inches ... there is only so much room down in there ... i learned long ago.. the saw is actually less work that lopers... and mine have been rusting in the barn for 10 years ... but whatever pleases you is good enough for me.. just teach that beast a lesson.. lol ken

Yeah, that's a big ol' lilac all right Ken!!! I'm going to have to pick me up a pruning saw. Sometimes I don't have enough strength to squeeze the lopers and have to get my husband to do it. I have to say, it felt good to prune the Weigela back, like early Spring cleanup!!! Looks waaaaaaaay better!!! Tish
