Wait it out?

We have/had a nicely-sized rose of Sharon that has yet to bud. All of our others have leafed out (albeit one is struggling after this winter).

When I scratch at the lower branches, there is green underneath. The top, thinner branches are likely dead, though.

So, should I wait it out? Is there a chance it'll revive next season? Would pruning back help to invigorate it?

Should have leafed out by now....sounds like it didn't make it.
Pruning will not help rejuvenating unless there is growth somewhere on the plant....
I would replace it......

if its dead this season... its not going to not be dead next season ...

i might cut it to foot or two.. and see if the roots might push some new buds from down low .. and at least i wouldnt have to look at the rest the rest of the year...

and if it doesnt ... i would dig it out in fall ... and that is why i left it a foot or two.. to help dig it out ....

i suspect.. the whole scratch test thing.. is that they will remain greenish.. until the heat of summer hits.. and then they wont be green anymore.... i am seeing the same in my garden ...

I don't know. I remember one in our neighbor's yard that didn't leaf out one year until July. I certainly wouldn't have looked at it that long, but it wasn't mine to take out.
