Weigela wine and roses question!

Last year I bought a small one that bloomed but this spring it hardly leafed so I cut it way down and it has not flowered. So having loved the flowers it put out I bought two bigger wine and roses , a 2 yr and and 3 yr plant both big plants but both showing no signs of blooming. Should I not expect them to flower this year, It seems a bit late and that they should be showing buds if they are going to. I guess Im quizzing as to why they are not blooming. They are both in full sun both getting plenty of water.

I've found these to be very finicky and temperamental. Other weigelas do great..but these aren't great for me. Not a highly informative answer, I realize, but just wanted to share my experience. lol

Any chance you pruned it last Fall?

Actually no the one I had last year was small so I decided not to touch at all last year.

RE: Weigela wine and roses question!

Recently I went over to a nearby plant farm and talked to an expert on these plants there. He told me if they were not blooming when I bought them and were not blooming at present that they would not bloom this year. But recently and presently with the high heat I started to water more heavily and lo and behold!! There is now some light flowering. I am shocked! Maybe I have not been watering these babies thorough enough.

I am now convinced my problem with this shrub is me and that I have been severely underwatering. I have read so much about not to overwater because of root rot and causing them to die on the spot that Ive severely underwatered.
