I planted shrubs, artic willow shrub, spireas 3 diff. kinds,a ninebark, winged burning bush on the east side of the raised deck. During the winter, which was a cold one with lots of snow, we shoveled snow off the deck onto the shrub border. Now the only ones that survived are the ninebark, a couple of spereas, altho they are very slow to leaf out, also the willow and its also really slow to leaf out.I was under the impression that the more snow to insulate them would be good, was I wrong?I don't know what to put there if they can't handle the snow, any one have some answers? Thanks

natural snow.. can be an insulator.. repeated crushing of the plant with shoveled snow.. crushes plants.. and can lead to suffocation of the plant below.. should ice build up ... otherwise.. are all those plants zone appropriate for z2??? ken

No salt and I was pretty sure that all of these were for this zone.

quick google search says ninebark only to z3 ... but i still think it is the shoveling.. when the snow melts.. havent you ever noticed.. where you have piled it.. that the last few inches.. ends up looking like glacial ice ... it just keeps packing down .. this can cause an anaerobic condition on the top of the soil.. which means air movement might be restricted.. as it would not be with natural snowfall ... basically roots need air..a s much as other things.. and when air is cut off.. plants suffer ... the simplest solutions.. that i came up with.. was to not plant anything closer than 3 feet to the deck.. so i could use that 3 feet to shovel the snow ... in other words.. you planted them too close to the deck ... move out whatever is left in fall [at the next proper planting time]... and if you replant.. keep them further away ... and do your research on proper plants.. been there.. done that.. getting screwed by local sellers selling questionable material .. especially if it is bigboxstore ... ken

just remember.. plants are planted to hide the foundation .. not ON THE FOUNDATION ... its the most common gardening mistake.. EVER!!!! besides.. most likely.. you need the space to maintain the deck ... staining.. power washing.. etc.. give yourself space to get in there.. and you will have a natural place for the snow ... you are welcome.. been there.. done that.. glad i could share the pain.. lol ken
