Lancaster County ID

I took this pic today in Lancaster County PA. This north facing wall is sheer rock, blasted out during road construction along the Susquehanna River. It is interesting that even during the dryest part of summer, moisture continues to ooze out and feed the vegetation.
Can you name this shrub? Why is it that we NEVER see it in the commercial trade?

Rhododendron maximum! I love those things - apparently, the reason they aren't really common in the nursery trade is because of the smaller blooms, later bloom time (after peak sales), and reluctance of cuttings to root. I've planted a few, and they are the most vigorous Rhododendrons I've got.

It's all about what can be grown readily in numbers and will go home with people after being seen sitting in a pot in an outlet. Ease of production, conformity to popular taste, tendency to show well in a pot (or other common means of display) - they all have to be there or an item does not remain on the market.
