| I want and need to do a living fence of Clethra. Does anyone have opinion of this choice?
(Not the short ones but the taller ones)
Thanks |

| Plant has an irregular loose habit and not lend itself for a regular/formal fence. However, it suckers and if happy could form fairly dense thickets which with some work (and imagination) could be viewed as an informal fence. |

| No meat on it in winter. Better to use evergreen plants, should be many choices in USDA 7. |

| Well perhaps the OP should indicate why he/she thinks it is a good choice. |

| Reason for choice - I really like the white color for the garden. Not looking for a formal living fence - informal is fine. bboy has a good point about no winter foliage though. I really need something that grows quickly but doesn't get over, say, 6-8 ft. Neighbors are very close and I am very tired of looking at their unkempt yard and them too. They just walk on over to our place when we are out in the yard too. I want to stop this nonsense. I would do a fence, but I would rather have a living fence. Any suggestions? Is there a fast growing holly maybe. They would not walk thru that for sure Thanks everyone. Anxiouly awaiting for suggestions from a group a people who have far more knowledge than I do. Linda |

| Consider Abelia - many new cultivars available. 'Canyon Creek' might be good. |

| Clethra is a slower growing species. If you have rabbits, they LOVE Cleathra....just as much as burning bush and forthergilla. |

Abelia is an excellent suggestion!!! In my neck of the woods only A.grandiflora could get to 6', but I've seen several very nice lightly trimmed hedges-fences about 5' tall and like the look very much. |

| It looks like I will be trying to find Ableia come this fall, unless I opt to go for something evergreen. I want to thank every one for their input also. It is very helpful to have knowledgeable people make suggestions and I appreciate the fact that you do that. Linda In NC |

| By the way, Abelia is mostly (if not fully) evergreen here in Atlanta. |

| Do you have deer where you live? We can't have evergreen "fences" here because of the deer--they eat every evergreen except possibly Pieris. Clethra is a great shrub for moist soil and for a fair amount of shade. And it's native. |
