Sky Pencil and brown leaves

Hello,

I'm in Zone 7a. I planted a couple of sky pencil hollies on the southern side of my house early this spring. I added in some holly tone, at the sales person's suggestion. All has been well until last week, when we suddenly had 104 degree heat. One of the two sky pencils now looks like it has burned up. The leaves are all brown. This Holly is only 30 feet away from the other one, both are foundation plantings.

Both have been treated the same for the past three months. Any hints on what may be wrong with the one and what I might do to help it? Thanks!

one is not getting the same EFFECTIVE amount of water ... for some reason or another ...

insert finger and figure out why

more facts rather than brown and 30 feet apart might help the discussion ... what is your soil type .. did you amend the soil .. BBurlap or potted ... how close to the house.. difference in sun ... watering protocol .. etc ...

The shrubs were potted. They are about 3' out from the foundation of the house. Identical sun and watering.

The only difference in conditions is that the brown one is in a section of dirt about 3' x 3' and then it is surrounded by a 2' deep gravel driveway on three sides.

The healthy one, is in the middle of an 8' long foundation bed, which has a sidewalk running in front of it.

Both shrubs also have Hyacynth Bean vines growing next to them. I noticed this morning that that HB's next to the brown shrub, have some yellow leaves. I've been growing HB's for 15 years and have NEVER had the slightest problem with them. Certainly never any yellow leaves!

They got fried. I have lots of damage on many trees and shrubs from this latest heatwave. Established and non-established trees and shrubs & all on the south side.
