Two species of Banana Shrubs - White and Purple

They are different species.

If I am not mistaken that red one has been reclassified and is now just a different variety Michelia figo var. crassipes, not a different species Michelia crassipes as in the past.

Darn taxonomists.

cearbhaill, thank you for the clarification. I don't know if I can change the first post, but let me acknowledge the correction. The two are almost identical though, so it makes sense that they are the same thing.

Michelia was being placed under Magnolia by 1988, various authors have adopted this since.
