Acuba pruning - height question

Hello all! I have three nice acubas growing in large containers which sit on the ground in front of my front porch. I'd like to plant them in the ground there - the light is perfect for them - but I don't want them to grow too tall. Can acuba be pruned and kept to a height of about three to four feet?

RE: Acuba pruning - height question

My beautiful Acuba was "pruned" by deer. It had been about 6 feet and by the end of Winter was defoliated. I have since moved it to be closer to the house (away from the deer) and pruned it back to about 4 feet (height I also want to maintain). At first it was sulking for a good several weeks but now I see it regrowing at all the branches. Additionally there seems to be new plant shooting up from the roots at ground level. So, yes, I guess this plant will survive being cut back periodically--however, you will most likely be restricting any females you have from fruiting.--The females are covered in red berries in the Spring. PS. They transplant fairly well but if you are transplanting in the Summer try to pick a day that is overcast or showery and not too hot--then mulch. Good luck!

RE: Acuba pruning - height question

You can most definitely prune your Aucubas to the height you desire. No problem. And, if they're female and have a male nearby for pollination, you may also find that you won't lose too many berries from an annual pruning. It depends, but for me the flowers (and therefore the berries) tend to be lower down on the shrub among the older branches.
