Ixora question

I'm in Houston. I just bought several ixoras, maui clone. They will be planted on the south side of my house in a protected area. I just read that they aren't freeze-tolerant. Does anyone know what kind of cold they can take? Did I make a mistake in getting these? At least they weren't expensive.

never heard of it ..

so i googled it for you ... it appears there are quite a number of variations.. and that you might need the second latin name to get precise information ...

i see.. at the link.. it is not hardy to z8 ... so you are real borderline ..

but i dont understand.. if it was cheap.. and you liked it.. enjoy it.. what will be.. will be ... i just dont see a 'mistake' .. as you suggest ...

do you have the full latin name ... so we can be more precise????

RE: Ixora question

People here who grow tropicals will know what it is. I'm not worried about that, Ken. 'Maui' is one of the most commonly grown clones.

I'm looking for a plant that will be a blooming shrub for a bed that's getting a major overhaul, so that's why it may be a mistake. I wanted to plant a row of them in one area. If it isn't cold hardy, that is, if it can't take a couple of light freezes, it may not be the right plant for what I need. I'm going to keep one in a pot so I can bring it in when we do have a freeze.

I think they could take light freezes easily- it's the hard freezes that will get them. The Maui's are pretty tough though- depends on whether you want to protect them and push the zone or not.

RE: Ixora question

That's a good article, thanks! I went to HD today and found some Ixora 'Maui Sunset' and got two. They get about the same size, and as the orange 'Maui', and the label says they're hardy down to 20. It hardly ever gets that cold here.

The label also says it's fragrant, but I sure can't smell it.

I'm in the zone for them, 9a, but occasionally we have a freeze that is very atypical for our area, and we lose a lot when that happens. There used to be a lot of olive trees here, then a freeze that went down to 18 for a few days wiped them all out.
