Gardenia Question

The person across the street planted several gardenias (veitchii) in a row, some get morning to noon sun, some are under a tree. The ones under the tree look great. The others that get a lot more sun and are getting burned. At the nursery, they were all in full sun and looked great. I planted one from the same nursery in a sunny area that's shaded part of the day by a tree that is going to be cut down soon because it's diseased.

I thought gardenias could take a good bit of sun here (Houston), and am wondering, though, if the sunlight is the reason those are getting burned. He did no bed prep at all, just dug holes in our clay, alkaline soil and stuck them in. Bad boy. Mine is in a bed that I removed a couple of roses from. That bed is getting an extreme makeover.

That's one plant I don't see often, so I can't assess where they are growing. I do that when I'm in my car and am curious about a plant, but haven't seen any gardenias recently at all.
