Gardenia Question

The person across the street planted several gardenias (veitchii) in a row, some get morning to noon sun, some are under a tree. The ones under the tree look great. The others that get a lot more sun and are getting burned. At the nursery, they were all in full sun and looked great. I planted one from the same nursery in a sunny area that's shaded part of the day by a tree that is going to be cut down soon because it's diseased.

I thought gardenias could take a good bit of sun here (Houston), and am wondering, though, if the sunlight is the reason those are getting burned. He did no bed prep at all, just dug holes in our clay, alkaline soil and stuck them in. Bad boy. Mine is in a bed that I removed a couple of roses from. That bed is getting an extreme makeover.

That's one plant I don't see often, so I can't assess where they are growing. I do that when I'm in my car and am curious about a plant, but haven't seen any gardenias recently at all.

RE: Gardenia Question

His were planted about a month ago, and the only ones with leaves that are dying are the ones getting the most sun. They are sprouting new leaves that look fine, but then, we've had cloudy skies and rain every day for the last week or more, so they haven't had the sun exposure that the plants got when he planted them. The four under the tree look just fine. There has to be something besides alkaline clay going on. They're all in a row, in the same soil.

RE: Gardenia Question

I think that is too much sun for gardenias in Houston. Even in Georgia I would give them protection from sun after 2 pm and I think Houston would be hotter.

RE: Gardenia Question

First of all, it is gardenia veitchi, which is a little harder to grow than mnay other gardenias.
Veitchi doesnt really do well in any direct sun.
If you can grow it on the porch, or where it doesn't get direct hot sun at all, it will flourish.
Now August beauty, totally different shrub. Can take hot afternoon sun, believe it or not.
It will also take snow.
When you think of gardenias, think of azela and rhododendrum.
SO, if your leaves start to burn, see if you can shade it a bit more in the hot months and it will be fine.
COngrats!
