Confused on the watering issue of shrubs!

First off my weigela red prince have done and are doing well , it is the wine and roses where I have been having a problem. The problem has seemingly been lack of flowering lack of growth , lack of everything. So this year after some investigation and experimenttation I was sure that I killed my first wine and roses by over watering. But now after watering more heavily during this heat spell and all of a sudden two recent wine and roses have started flowering when having done nothing all season, I now feel I have been largely underwatering on these new shrub, by new I mean having planting them this season although they sizable 3gal shrubs. I also feel I killed my first one from last year by the same method.

perhaps you are confusing a transplant.. with an 'established' shrub ...

established shrubs... older then 3 years in situ ... usually need little or no water except in extreme drought ... as mine are right now.. with drooping leaves ...

transplants.. rely on you for a supreme 'culture' of nice damp [as compared to wet] soil .. with a nice mulch to temper wild swings ..

as to how often you need to water is dependent on your soil.. and how water moves thru it..

short of digging small holes or inserting your finger and actually finding out how yoru watering protocol is performing ... there is no way for us to tell you how long you have to water .. to get water down into the entire root mass of the transplant ...

i might guess that your watering is superficial .. and though you might be wetting the plant .... or the soil surface.. you were previously not getting enough water.. down into the root mass ..

water as you will.. then dig a small hole.. and find out what you accomplished ...

good luck

Open up roots and remove potting soil when planting. Keep well watered after planting, and use mulch to shade soil around new plants.

Can keep roots moist while taking soil off by doing it in a tub of clean water.

Intact potting soil root-balls surrounded by finer textured natural soil will lose water to it during dry periods.
